England Fans Turn Oasis Hit "Wonderwall" Into World Cup Victory
England’s World Cup celebrations have found an unexpected soundtrack. After every win in the United States, supporters are now joining players in singing Oasis hit “Wonderwall”, turning a simple post-match moment into a growing stadium tradition. The latest came after a knockout win over DR Congo in Atlanta, marking the third time the chant has followed an England victory in the tournament.
The trend has quickly spread across Dallas, New Jersey, and Atlanta, where fans and players have shared full-time singalongs after matches. The moment has also drawn attention from Liam Gallagher, who posted: “Cmon England cmon Wonderwall.”
England captain Harry Kane described the first singalong as one of his “favourite ever moments in an England shirt,” while former goalkeeper Joe Hart said it gives players a rare chance to step away from pressure and connect with supporters.
While traditional chants like Three Lions and Sweet Caroline remain part of matchday culture, “Wonderwall” has emerged as the standout anthem of the tournament. The 1995 Oasis track has also re-entered the UK charts following its viral popularity.
Music writer John Robb called the song a mix of “euphoria and melancholy,” saying it fits football emotion perfectly. Author PJ Harrison added that its open meaning allows fans to connect it with different emotions and moments.
Noel Gallagher has previously described “Wonderwall” in different ways, including a love song and an “imaginary friend.” The title is linked to a 1968 film associated with George Harrison, which influenced its creation.
England fans now hope the tradition continues as the team progresses further in the tournament.
