The Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly Elections 2026 have brought a new wave of political activity across Pakistan. Originally expected to take place during the winter season, the elections were postponed due to severe weather conditions and are now scheduled for June 7, 2026.
Today marks the final day of election campaigning, after which political parties and candidates will wait for the public’s verdict. Political observers are closely watching constituency trends, party dynamics, and historical voting patterns across the region.
A Long-Standing Political Trend in Gilgit-Baltistan
Gilgit-Baltistan’s political history reveals a consistent trend. Voters in the region have often supported the political party that holds power at the federal level in Islamabad.
As a result, the political landscape has experienced significant shifts from one election cycle to another.
PTI’s Strong Performance in the 2020 Elections
In the November 2020 elections, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) emerged as the dominant force. The party initially secured 16 general seats.
Later, with the support of independent lawmakers and reserved-seat allocations, PTI’s strength increased to 22 seats. The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) won 5 seats, while the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) managed only 3 seats.
Following the victory, Khalid Khurshid became Chief Minister. After his legal disqualification in 2023, Haji Gulbar Khan formed a coalition government and completed the assembly’s term.
PML-N’s Dominance in 2015
The political picture was very different in the 2015 elections. At that time, PML-N was in power at the federal level and achieved a sweeping victory in Gilgit-Baltistan.
The party secured a total of 22 seats, while PPP was reduced to a single seat. Hafiz Hafeezur Rehman served a full five-year term as Chief Minister, focusing heavily on infrastructure development across the region.
GBA-3 Gilgit-III: A Symbol of Changing Voter Preferences
The GBA-3 (Gilgit-III) constituency is often cited as a clear example of how quickly political preferences can change in Gilgit-Baltistan.
Historical Election Results
2009 Election:
Aftab Haider (PPP) won with 6,214 votes.
2015 Election:
Dr. Muhammad Iqbal (PML-N) secured victory with 7,852 votes.
2020 Election:
Syed Sohail Abbas Shah (PTI) won the seat with 6,807 votes.
These results highlight the electorate’s willingness to shift support between different political parties over time.
A Clear Majority Appears Unlikely
This election has become even more competitive because PTI-aligned candidates are contesting as independents rather than under a unified party symbol.
Political analysts believe that achieving a clear single-party majority may be difficult.
As a result, independent candidates could play a crucial role after the election, with coalition-building and political alliances likely to determine the formation of the next government.
Why Was the Election Date Changed?
The Election Commission of Gilgit-Baltistan (ECGB) had originally planned to hold the elections on January 24, 2026.
However, severe snowstorms, heavy snowfall, and blocked transportation routes made it difficult for many voters to access polling stations.
To ensure broader participation and protect voting rights, the ECGB officially rescheduled polling for June 7, 2026.
Role of the Caretaker Government
A caretaker administration led by Caretaker Chief Minister Justice (Retired) Yar Muhammad Nasir has been managing day-to-day affairs until the elections.
The caretaker setup has been tasked with ensuring transparency and smooth administration throughout the electoral process.
Political Battle for 24 General Seats
The Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly consists of 33 seats in total.
Of these, voters directly elect representatives to 24 general seats. The remaining 9 seats include 6 reserved for women and 3 reserved for technocrats and professionals.
These reserved seats are allocated to political parties based on their performance in the general-seat elections.
PPP, PML-N, and Independent Candidates Face Off
The main electoral contest features PPP and PML-N, while PTI-backed candidates are contesting as independents.
Hundreds of candidates have successfully completed the scrutiny process across the 24 constituencies. Several districts and constituencies have attracted significant media attention due to high-profile political contests.
All eyes are now on June 7, when voters across Gilgit-Baltistan will decide the region’s next political direction and shape its future government.
