Google Expands Gemini Spark AI Assistant to macOS With New Automation Tools
Google is expanding its Gemini Spark AI assistant to the Gemini app on macOS, introducing a range of new desktop automation features. The always-on assistant, first introduced in May, was initially limited to AI Ultra subscribers in the United States across web, Android, and iOS platforms. With this update, Mac users can now automate local tasks such as organizing files and generating budget spreadsheets from downloaded invoices.
Google also plans to enable remote task execution from mobile devices, along with deeper integration with Workspace apps and several third-party services. The rollout will begin on web and mobile before extending to macOS.
Desktop Automation Features Arrive on Mac
Google launched the Gemini app for Mac a few months ago and has continued to update it since. The integration of Spark into macOS now allows users to handle local automation tasks directly on their desktop, including organizing files and creating budget spreadsheets from invoices without manual effort.
Remote Task Execution Coming Soon
Spark will soon support remote task execution from a mobile phone, enabling users to assign complex workflows to the AI agent. The assistant will then execute these tasks on a Mac without requiring manual input, allowing for greater flexibility between devices.
Expanded App Integrations
Google is adding support for Workspace apps, including Google Tasks and Keep, allowing Spark to pull relevant information directly from these services. The assistant will also soon integrate with:
Canva
Dropbox
Instacart
Zillow Rentals
These integrations will allow Spark to perform more advanced actions, such as designing flyers or ordering groceries, directly through the assistant.
Rollout Timeline and MCP Support
The connected app features will roll out on web and mobile platforms starting next week, with the Mac version following shortly after. Google is also introducing Model Context Protocol (MCP) support for Spark, which will enable seamless connections with numerous third-party applications.
Real-Time Topic Monitoring
Spark can now monitor specific topics and trigger actions in real time. According to Google, users can ask the assistant to track a favorite soccer team and receive match highlights, or request a detailed financial report the moment a stock hits a designated threshold.
Despite these expanded capabilities, Gemini Spark remains exclusive to AI Ultra subscribers in the US for now.
