Tesla has begun engineering tests of its first production-spec Cybercab vehicles on public streets in Austin, Texas, marking a milestone in the company's push toward fully autonomous transportation. The two-seat vehicle, built without a steering wheel or pedals, was engineered from the start as a purpose-built robotaxi rather than adapted from an existing model. 

A total of 34 test vehicles are currently operating in downtown Austin, each carrying a safety observer who monitors the ride without taking part in driving. The Texas Department of Transportation has confirmed the vehicles contain no driver-operated controls. The tests follow Tesla's earlier rollout of driverless ride-hailing service in the city using Model Y vehicles.

Cybercab Testing Details and Vehicle Design

The Cybercab test fleet began operating on Austin's public roads as part of an engineering validation phase intended to confirm how the production hardware performs under real-world driving conditions. Unlike earlier autonomous test vehicles that began as conventional cars retrofitted with self-driving hardware, the Cybercab was designed from the ground up without manual driving controls.

No Steering Wheel or Pedals

State transportation officials in Texas have verified that the vehicles lack any steering wheel, brake pedal or accelerator pedal, relying entirely on Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) software to operate. Video recorded during the test runs shows the vehicle's central touchscreen running in full autonomous mode, displaying Tesla's minimalist software interface rather than traditional driver controls.

Safety Observer Role

Each test vehicle carries one safety observer whose responsibility is limited to monitoring the ride and intervening only in the event of an emergency. The observers do not operate the vehicle's steering or braking, since no such manual controls exist on board.

Timeline From Concept to Public-Road Testing

The Cybercab's appearance on Austin streets caps roughly 20 months of development since the vehicle was first introduced.

The ongoing Cybercab tests are limited to engineering validation and are not open to paying passengers or members of the public. Tesla's objective during this phase is to assess the reliability and real-world performance of the production hardware before any broader deployment.

Relationship to Tesla's Existing Robotaxi Service

The Cybercab tests run alongside Tesla's established robotaxi operations in Austin, which use modified Model Y vehicles to carry paying riders. That service, which began as a limited pilot in January, expanded to cover a wider area of the city by early June and started accepting fare-paying customers from the general public later that month.

What Comes Next for Tesla's Autonomous Fleet

Tesla has not provided a public timeline for when Cybercab units might transition from engineering tests to passenger service. The current phase focuses on confirming that the purpose-built, controls-free design performs reliably on public roads before any expansion of its role within Tesla's robotaxi operations in Austin.
