Iran Announces Seven-Day Funeral Programme for Ali Khamenei
Ali Khamenei Funeral Ceremonies to Be Held Across Iran and Iraq
Millions of mourners are expected to take part in a seven-day funeral programme from July 3 to July 9 for Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, with ceremonies and processions planned in several cities across Iran and Iraq. The funeral events will begin in Tehran on July 3, while the burial is scheduled to take place in Mashhad after the week-long programme.
The funeral ceremonies will include religious rites and public processions across different cities during the seven-day period. According to the available information, people are expected to gather each day to pay their respects to the late Iranian leader.
The burial in Mashhad was initially scheduled for March, but it was postponed as the US and Israeli war with Iran continued. The revised funeral schedule now places the burial at the end of the ceremonies taking place between July 3 and July 9.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei became Iran’s Supreme Leader in 1989 following the death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, who led the Islamic revolution and became the country's first supreme leader.
While Khomeini was described as the ideological force behind the revolution that ended the rule of the Pahlavi monarchy, Khamenei later shaped Iran’s military and paramilitary structure during his leadership.
The funeral will also mark the first major state ceremony under Mojtaba Khamenei, identified as Khamenei’s successor and son. According to the source, Mojtaba Khamenei has remained out of public view since the US-Israel war began four months ago.
The funeral programme will officially begin in Tehran on July 3, where global leaders, senior officials, religious figures and scholars from around the world are expected to attend and pay their respects before the ceremonies continue in other locations across Iran and Iraq.
