Microsoft Unveils Seven AI Models at Build 2026 to Strengthen Independence in AI Race

Microsoft has introduced seven new in-house artificial intelligence models during its Build 2026 developer conference in San Francisco, marking a significant step toward reducing its reliance on external AI providers.

The announcement highlights Microsoft's broader strategy to develop its own AI ecosystem despite investing billions of dollars in leading AI companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic.

New AI Models Aim to Boost Performance and Reduce Costs

Among the newly announced offerings is a mid-sized AI model featuring 35 billion active parameters and a 256,000-token context window.

According to Microsoft, the model is designed to handle complex multi-step instructions, perform long-context reasoning, and support advanced code generation tasks.

MAI-Code-1-Flash Targets Developers

Microsoft also launched MAI-Code-1-Flash, a specialized coding model capable of transforming text-based descriptions into source code for websites and software applications.

The company confirmed that the model is being integrated into GitHub Copilot and Visual Studio Code, allowing developers to generate code more efficiently.

By operating its own AI models on Azure infrastructure, Microsoft expects to lower costs associated with third-party AI services. The company believes these savings can ultimately benefit developers and enterprise customers.

Microsoft stated that independent blind evaluations conducted by Surge, its human-rating partner, showed a preference for MAI-Thinking-1 over Anthropic's Claude Sonnet 4.6. The company also claimed that the model delivers coding performance comparable to Claude Opus 4.6 on benchmark tests.

Majorana 2 Quantum Chip Reaches Key Milestone

In addition to its AI announcements, Microsoft revealed major progress in quantum computing through its Majorana 2 quantum chip.

The company said the new chip is 1,000 times more reliable than its predecessor, bringing Microsoft closer to developing a commercially useful quantum computer.

Improved Qubit Stability

Qubits, which serve as the fundamental building blocks of quantum computing, are highly sensitive to environmental changes such as temperature fluctuations and vibrations.

Microsoft reported that qubits on the Majorana 2 chip remain stable for an average of 20 seconds, compared with only milliseconds on the original version.

The company compared the advancement to moving from a smartphone that requires daily charging to one that could last for years without needing a recharge.

Zulfi Alam, Corporate Vice President of Microsoft Quantum, said the company expects to have a quantum machine by 2029 capable of solving commercially viable and practical problems.

Currently, the Majorana 2 chip contains only 12 qubits, while a fully useful quantum computer would require millions.

Topological Qubits Remain at the Core of Microsoft's Strategy

Microsoft's quantum research is centered on topological qubits, a concept based on the properties of a quasi-particle first theorized in the 1930s by Italian physicist Ettore Majorana.

The company's journey in this field has faced challenges. In 2018, Microsoft withdrew a paper published in the journal Nature that claimed evidence of the particle's existence.

Despite the setback, Microsoft continued its research efforts. The second-generation chip improves upon the original design by replacing aluminum with lead as a superconductor, contributing to enhanced performance.

However, the chip and its supporting research have not yet undergone peer review, and several physicists have called for additional technical details.

IPO Activity Intensifies Among Microsoft's AI Partners

Microsoft's push toward AI independence comes as some of its largest AI investments prepare for major stock market debuts.

Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI models, confidentially filed for an initial public offering (IPO) on June 1. The filing followed a Series H funding round that raised $65 billion and increased the company's valuation to $965 billion.

Meanwhile, OpenAI is also preparing its own confidential IPO filing.

Microsoft has invested $13 billion in OpenAI and up to $5 billion in Anthropic. At the same time, the company continues to offer both firms' AI models through its Azure cloud platform.

The latest announcements from Build 2026 demonstrate Microsoft's determination to expand its influence across both artificial intelligence and quantum computing as competition in the technology sector continues to accelerate.
