PTA Tax Calculator Check PTA Tax, IMEI Status & Registration 2026

Bringing a phone from abroad or buying an imported phone in Pakistan? You need to know two things: is the phone PTA-registered, and if not, how much PTA tax will you pay?.

This guide covers everything about PTA tax how to check your phone’s IMEI status, the current tax rates by phone value, and the step-by-step registration process through DIRBS.

What Is PTA Tax and Why Does It Exist?

PTA (Pakistan Telecommunication Authority) requires mobile phones used on Pakistani networks to be registered through the DIRBS (Device Identification, Registration, and Blocking System).

The PTA tax is the customs duty and regulatory fee paid to register imported phones that are not already PTA-approved.

This system exists to ensure mobile devices used in Pakistan are legally registered and to control stolen, counterfeit, and smuggled phones.

Key Point: Phones purchased from authorized Pakistani retailers are already PTA-registered. PTA tax is mainly paid for imported, gifted, or grey-market phones.

How to Check If Your Phone Is PTA Registered

Before anything else, check your phone’s current status. There are three ways:

Method 1: SMS (Fastest)

  • Dial *#06# on your phone to find your 15-digit IMEI number.
  • Send the IMEI number via SMS to 8484.
  • You’ll receive a reply within seconds:
Status What It Means Action Needed
COMPLIANT Phone is registered and approved None you’re good
NOT COMPLIANT Phone is not registered Register and pay PTA tax before grace period ends
BLOCKED Phone has been blocked Registration window expired or device reported stolen

Method 2: DIRBS Website

  • Go to dirbs.pta.gov.pk
  • Click “Check IMEI” and enter your 15-digit IMEI.
  • The website shows the same status (Compliant / Not Compliant / Blocked) plus additional details like brand, model, and registration date.

Method 3: PTA DIRBS App

  • Download the “DIRBS” app from Play Store or App Store.
  • Enter your IMEI to check status instantly.

PTA Tax Rates How Much Will You Pay? (2026)

PTA tax depends on the phone’s value (determined by GSMA’s international pricing database, not your purchase price).

The rates are set by FBR and include customs duty, regulatory fee, and applicable taxes.

Tax Rates for CNIC-Based Registration

Phone Value (USD) PTA Tax (Rs) — Approx. Example Phones
Up to $30 Rs 550 – 1,100 Basic feature phones
$30 – $100 Rs 1,100 – 4,400 Budget Android (Itel, Nokia)
$100 – $200 Rs 4,400 – 11,000 Infinix Hot, Tecno Spark, Redmi 14C
$200 – $350 Rs 11,000 – 22,000 Samsung A36, Redmi Note 14, Realme 13
$350 – $500 Rs 22,000 – 33,000 Samsung A56, Vivo V40, iPhone SE
$500 – $700 Rs 33,000 – 50,000 Xiaomi 15, Samsung S24 FE
$700+ Rs 50,000 – 80,000+ iPhone 16, Samsung S25 Ultra

Important: These are approximate ranges. The exact tax is calculated by DIRBS based on the phone’s GSMA-listed value, not what you paid for it.

The DIRBS portal shows the exact amount when you initiate registration.

Passport-Based Registration (Travellers)

If you’re arriving in Pakistan with a phone from abroad, you can register one phone per passport per year at a reduced rate or free (depending on the current policy).

The phone must be registered within 60 days of your arrival.

  • Who qualifies: Anyone entering Pakistan with a valid passport (Pakistani or foreign).
  • Limit: Typically 1 phone per passport per calendar year.
  • Cost: Significantly lower than CNIC-based registration. Some travellers qualify for free registration for one device.
  • Deadline: Must register within 60 days of arrival. After that, the phone is blocked.

Before paying PTA tax on an imported phone, compare the total cost (phone price + PTA tax) with local retail prices buying locally is often cheaper. Check current prices in our new mobile prices Pakistan guide.

How to Register Your Phone with PTA (Step by Step)

Step 1 – Check IMEI status: Send your IMEI to 8484 or check on dirbs.pta.gov.pk. If it says “Not Compliant,” proceed to registration.

Step 2 – Go to the DIRBS portal: Visit dirbs.pta.gov.pk and click “Register Device.” Log in with your CNIC or passport.

Step 3 – Enter device details: Input your IMEI number. The system will automatically identify the phone model and show the applicable tax amount.

Step 4 – Pay the tax: Payment can be made through:

  • Online banking (HBL, UBL, MCB, and other partner banks).
  • JazzCash or Easypaisa mobile wallets.
  • Bank branch visit (deposit slip with PSID number).

Step 5 – Confirmation: Once payment is verified (usually within 24-48 hours), your phone status changes to “Compliant.” You’ll receive an SMS confirmation.

Note: Do not factory reset or change SIMs during the registration process. Keep the same SIM in the phone until the status changes to Compliant.

What Happens If You Don’t Register?

If your phone is not registered within the grace period (60 days from first network use):

  • Phase 1: You’ll receive warning SMS messages from PTA reminding you to register.
  • Phase 2: Outgoing calls and SMS may be restricted.
  • Phase 3: The phone is fully blocked on all Pakistani networks no calls, no SMS, no mobile data. Wi-Fi still works, but the phone becomes a Wi-Fi-only device.

Once blocked, you can still register the phone and pay the tax, but some additional reactivation steps may apply. It’s always better to register within the grace period.

If the PTA tax makes importing too expensive, you can find excellent phones already PTA-approved in the local market. See our best mobile under Rs 30,000 guide for top picks at every budget.

How to Know If a Phone Is PTA-Approved Before Buying

To avoid the PTA tax hassle entirely, buy a PTA-approved phone from the start. Here’s how to make sure:

  • Ask for the IMEI: Before paying, ask the seller for the IMEI number and send it to 8484. If it says “Compliant,” the phone is approved.
  • Buy from authorized sources: Samsung Official, Xiaomi Official, Daraz brand stores, and authorized retailer shops sell PTA-approved phones by default.
  • Check the warranty card: Official warranty cards from the manufacturer’s Pakistani distributor are a strong indicator the phone is PTA-registered.
  • Avoid “open box” or “international” listings: These are often grey-market imports that are not PTA-registered. The lower price looks attractive but PTA tax can double the total cost.

Yes. Once your phone is registered and the status shows “Compliant,” it stays registered permanently. You don’t need to renew or pay again, even if you change SIMs or networks.

Q: Can I register more than one phone on my CNIC?
Yes, but each phone requires its own PTA tax payment. There is no limit on the number of phones you can register on a single CNIC, as long as you pay the applicable duty for each.

Q: My phone shows “Not Compliant” but I bought it locally. What do I do?
Contact the retailer you purchased from they are responsible for selling PTA-approved devices. If they can’t resolve it, visit a PTA regional office with your purchase receipt and CNIC.
