Lenovo Confirms Smaller Legion Gaming Tablet With 5G Support

Lenovo has officially confirmed a new, more compact addition to its Legion gaming tablet lineup, set to arrive with 5G connectivity and an OLED display. The device, expected to launch in China in August 2026, will sit alongside the recently released Legion Y700 Gen 5, which currently features an 8.8-inch screen.

Lenovo first showed the unannounced model at the Shenzhen Nuclear Fusion Gaming Carnival, where it appeared in a glass display case before the company made it official.

A promotional render shared by Lenovo reveals a punch-hole front camera, though the bezel size appears similar to the existing Gen 5 model. The tablet's processor remains unconfirmed, with Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and a Dimensity chipset both considered possibilities.

A Smaller Footprint Than the Legion Y700 Gen 5

Lenovo's newest Legion tablet is shaping up to be the most compact device in the current lineup. The company has confirmed it will be smaller than the Legion Y700 Gen 5, which already stands out in the market for its relatively tight 8.8-inch frame.

The Legion Y700 Gen 5, sold internationally as the Legion Tab Gen 5, launched on March 21, 2026, as one of the first gaming tablets built around the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 platform. According to verified specifications listed on GSMArena, that model ships with an 8.8-inch IPS LCD panel at a 1904 x 3040 resolution, a 165Hz refresh rate, up to 24GB of RAM, a 9,000mAh battery with 68W wired charging, and runs Android 16. Notably, the Gen 5 model has no built-in cellular connectivity, relying solely on Wi-Fi for internet access.

The newly confirmed tablet will be marketed as a separate variant within the Y700 family rather than a direct replacement for the Gen 5 model.

First Spotted at a Gaming Festival

Images of the unreleased tablet first surfaced over the weekend of June 27-28 at the Nuclear Fusion Game Carnival in Shenzhen, one of China's larger gaming industry events. Photos circulated by attendees showed the device sealed inside a glass case, fueling speculation before Lenovo's confirmation.

The leaked unit displayed a two-tone finish and a single rear camera ringed by the Legion brand's signature broken-circle design, details that line up with the styling Lenovo has used across earlier Y700 models.

OLED Display and 5G Headline the Specs

Lenovo has confirmed two standout features for the upcoming tablet: support for 5G networks and an OLED display panel. Neither feature is currently available on the Legion Y700 Gen 5, which relies on an IPS LCD screen and, per its official specification sheet, ships with no built-in cellular connectivity at all.

The shift to OLED would mark a notable change for the Legion tablet line. Lenovo has stuck with LCD panels across recent Y700 generations, and customer feedback on retail listings has repeatedly requested an OLED option for richer contrast and deeper blacks.

Adding 5G would also address a long-standing gap in the Y700 series, which has so far depended on Wi-Fi for connectivity. A tablet capable of operating on mobile networks independently could appeal to gamers who want to play outside Wi-Fi range.

How the Design Compares to the Current Lineup

The promotional image Lenovo released shows a front-facing punch-hole camera cutout on the new tablet. However, the surrounding bezels appear to be roughly the same thickness as those found on the standard Legion Tab Gen 5, suggesting the size reduction comes primarily from a smaller display rather than slimmer borders.

Processor Choice Remains Unconfirmed

Lenovo has not disclosed which chipset will power the smaller tablet. The Legion Y700 Gen 5 runs on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, and it remains possible the new compact model will use the same processor.

However, industry watchers have also floated the possibility that Lenovo could turn to a MediaTek Dimensity chipset instead, a move that would mark a departure from the Snapdragon-only approach Lenovo has taken with its Legion gaming tablets to date.

The OLED upgrade could help Lenovo's smaller Legion tablet compete more directly with the upcoming RedMagic Astra 2, a rival gaming tablet that is also expected to launch with an OLED panel in the near future.

Compact gaming tablets have become an increasingly active category in China, with brands competing on display quality, battery life and connectivity options rather than size alone, since most models in this segment already cluster around the 8-to-9-inch range.
