WhatsApp Starts Activating Reserved Usernames for Select Users

WhatsApp has started activating reserved usernames for a limited number of users as part of the first phase of its new username system. The feature allows people to use a unique handle when connecting with new contacts, while offering privacy controls that can require a four-digit PIN. Both beta testers and regular users are beginning to receive access, although the rollout remains limited.

The username reservation feature was introduced last month, allowing users to claim their preferred handles before a wider release.

Users can check the feature by opening Settings, selecting Account and then choosing Username.

The privacy settings allow users to decide whether anyone who knows their username can contact them or whether new contacts must also enter a four-digit PIN.

WhatsApp may ask users to verify ownership when a selected username is already connected to an account on Facebook or Instagram.

The verification measure is intended to prevent misuse of high-profile usernames, impersonation attempts and possible scams.

Users whose reserved usernames have been activated may see a banner at the top of their chat list confirming that the handle is ready to share with new contacts.

The activation status can also be checked in the Username section of the profile. Users without access will see a message stating that usernames will be available soon.
