Young Doctor Killed During Robbery Near Karachi’s Teen Talwar

KARACHI: A young doctor serving at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre was shot dead during a robbery near Teen Talwar on Monday, police said. The victim, identified as Dr Akash Kumar, was outside a bank with his father and cousin when armed suspects targeted them and took a bag containing around Rs2.5 million.

South DIG Syed Asad Raza said gunfire broke out during the incident. The suspects fired two shots, while a private bank security guard also opened fire after believing that the bank was being targeted.

Dr Kumar was struck in the chest and taken to a private hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. The armed suspects escaped after taking the money.

Police said Dr Kumar had withdrawn Rs5 million from a private bank near Dilpasand Sweets at around 12:03pm. He also made purchases worth Rs50,000 before travelling a short distance with his father and cousin.

Four suspects riding two motorcycles had allegedly followed them. Police said the suspects caught up with the family when they reached another bank and tried to snatch the bag.

During the initial investigation, police determined that the bullet that killed the doctor was fired from the bank guard’s 30-bore pistol. The guard was arrested, and a spent bullet casing from his weapon was also recovered.

A forensic report later confirmed that the fatal bullet came from the security guard’s pistol. Police said the guard claimed that he had fired in self-defence, while investigators were considering whether charges should be pursued against him.

Police obtained CCTV footage from the area and collected location data for geo-fencing to help identify the robbers. DIG Raza said investigators had secured important clues about the suspects.

Dr Kumar was unmarried and had been working at JPMC for the past two years. His body was moved to the Chhippa morgue after legal formalities were completed.

The doctor’s family later brought his body to Teen Talwar and staged a protest demanding the arrest of those responsible. The Young Doctors Association Sindh also condemned the killing and called for immediate action.

The protest ended late at night after discussions with the Karachi mayor, the additional inspector general and other officials. Police assured the family that the suspects would be brought to justice.
