Freelancing Guides

A normal bank account can receive some foreign payments, but freelancers who earn regularly from overseas clients often need clearer remittance handling, better records and a way to retain part of their export proceeds in foreign currency. That is where freelancer accounts and linked Exporters' Special Foreign Currency Accounts (ESFCAs) become useful.

If you are setting up freelancing from the beginning, read our complete freelancing guide for Pakistan first. This guide focuses only on choosing, opening and using the right bank account for foreign freelance payments.

Why Use a Freelancer or Exporter Account for Freelance Payments?

SBP's freelancer framework allows eligible resident Pakistani freelancers to open a primary PKR account together with an ESFCA at authorized dealer banks. The linked structure is designed for export proceeds: the PKR account handles local banking, while the ESFCA can retain the permitted foreign-currency share of freelance earnings.

  • It creates a clearer banking trail for recurring foreign client payments.

  • The bank can classify the account for freelance/export activity instead of treating every inflow as an unexplained personal remittance.

  • Eligible freelancers can retain up to USD 5,000 per month or 50% of export proceeds, whichever is higher, in the ESFCA under current SBP rules.

  • Remittance records such as ePRC/PRC are easier to organize when the payment purpose and account setup are correct.

A freelancer account is not mandatory for every one-off foreign payment, but it becomes more practical when overseas income is regular, documentation matters or you want foreign-currency retention.

Who Can Open a Freelancer or Exporter Account?

Dedicated freelancer accounts are generally aimed at resident Pakistanis who provide digital, online, IT, consulting or other freelance services and receive payment from abroad. Eligibility is still bank-specific, so the exact account type depends on whether you apply as an individual freelancer, sole proprietor or registered business.

  • Individual freelancer: usually needs valid identity documents plus evidence or a declaration of freelance work/income.

  • Sole proprietor or business: may be asked for NTN, registration or business documents in addition to personal KYC.

  • IT exporter/company: banks may request entity documents and, where relevant, PSEB registration or export evidence.

You do not need to form a company only to qualify as an individual freelancer. If you later move from individual work to a sole proprietorship or company, our business registration guide Pakistan explains the main formal setup options.

Registration becomes relevant when you operate through a formal entity or apply for a product intended for registered exporters.

What Documents Should You Prepare Before Applying?

Commonly Requested Documents

  • Valid CNIC, SNIC, NICOP or other accepted identity document.

  • Mobile number registered against your CNIC where digital onboarding requires SIM verification.

  • Current residential address and basic contact details.

  • Proof or declaration of freelance work, such as a platform profile, client contract, invoice, email agreement or earnings statement.

  • Banking/source-of-income information requested in the account-opening form.

Documents Your Bank May Request

Banks can ask for additional documents when your profile, income level or legal structure requires more verification. These are not universal requirements for every individual freelancer.

  • Recent bank statement or proof of address.

  • NTN or tax-registration details.

  • PSEB registration for certain IT/ITeS exporter cases.

  • Sole-proprietorship, partnership or company registration documents.

  • Invoices, contracts or recent proof of foreign earnings.

  • Any extra KYC or source-of-funds evidence required under the bank's compliance policy.

How to Open a Freelancer or Exporter Account

Step 1: Choose the Bank and Account Type

Start by deciding whether you need only a PKR freelancer account or a linked ESFCA as well. Compare digital onboarding, available currencies, current vs savings options, debit-card features and how easily the bank handles foreign inward remittances.

Step 2: Confirm the Branch Requirements

Even when a bank advertises digital onboarding, confirm whether the exact freelancer/exporter product can be completed online or needs a branch step. If you are applying in person, call the branch first and ask whether it handles freelancer accounts and ESFCA opening.

Step 3: Complete the Account Opening Form

Enter your legal name, CNIC details, address, occupation and expected source of funds accurately. Describe your work as freelancing, export of services, IT/ITeS or the actual service you provide rather than using vague income descriptions.

Step 4: Submit Your Documents

Upload or provide the identity and work/income documents requested by the bank. Make sure the name on your documents matches the account application and that screenshots or scans are readable.

Step 5: Complete Bank Verification

The bank may verify your CNIC, SIM ownership, biometric data, address or source of income. Some digital applications also use a live photograph or video call. If the bank asks for more information, respond with documents that directly explain your freelance work and expected foreign receipts.

Step 6: Receive Your Account Details

After approval, confirm your account title, IBAN and whether the linked ESFCA has also been opened. Save the bank's official receiving instructions before asking a client to send money.

How to Receive Foreign Payments in Your Freelancer Account

Once your freelancer account is active, confirm that it is properly set up to receive payments from international clients. The exact requirements can vary by bank, payment route and currency, so verify the receiving process before giving payment details to a client.

Confirm Inward Remittance Support

Do not assume that every account can receive every type of foreign payment. Ask the bank whether your account accepts inward remittances for freelance or export-of-services income and whether any currency or transaction restrictions apply.

For payment-route choices before the money is sent, see our foreign payment routes guide covering Payoneer, Wise and direct bank transfers.

Ask the Bank for Receiving Instructions

Request the bank's official inward-remittance instructions for the currency your client will use. These instructions may include beneficiary details, SWIFT/BIC and, in some cases, correspondent-bank information.

Provide Any Required Supporting Documents

A bank may ask for an invoice, client agreement, platform statement or short description of the service before crediting or classifying a foreign receipt. Keep these documents ready, especially for larger or recurring payments.

Confirm Your SWIFT and IBAN Details

Copy your IBAN and SWIFT/BIC from an official bank source rather than typing them from memory. A single incorrect character can delay or return an international wire. Also confirm the exact beneficiary name shown on your account.

Give the Correct Bank Details to Your Client

For a direct international bank transfer, give the client only the details required to send the payment. The exact information varies by bank and currency.

  • Beneficiary name: Your exact bank-account title.

  • IBAN: Your complete Pakistani IBAN.

  • Bank name and address: Use the official details supplied by your bank.

  • SWIFT/BIC: The international code provided by your bank.

  • Payment reference: Use an invoice number or clear service description.

  • Correspondent bank details: Provide these only when your bank specifically requires them for that currency.

Never share your password, mobile-banking login, debit-card PIN, CVV or OTP. None of these details are required to receive a legitimate client payment.

Common Problems With Freelancer Bank Accounts

The Branch Says It Does Not Offer a Freelancer Account

Ask the branch to check the bank's current freelancer product or whether an existing/regular account can be tagged as a freelancer account. If the branch is unfamiliar with the product, contact the bank's official helpline or digital-account team instead of assuming the bank does not support freelancers.

The Bank Requests Additional Documents

This usually means the bank needs stronger KYC or source-of-income evidence. Provide the document that best proves the work: an invoice, contract, platform earnings statement, client correspondence or registration record. Additional verification does not automatically mean the application has been rejected.

A Foreign Payment Is Delayed or Put on Hold

Ask the sender for the payment reference and, for a SWIFT wire, the MT103 or trace details if available. Then give the bank your invoice and supporting work documents. A hold can result from compliance review, missing payment-purpose information, intermediary-bank routing or incorrect beneficiary details.

The Received Amount Is Lower Than Expected

Check whether the difference came from the sender's bank fee, correspondent-bank deduction, receiving-bank charge or currency conversion. For direct transfers, the client's charge option and the bank's exchange rate can materially change the final amount credited.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Keep My Existing Bank Account and Open a Freelancer Account?
Usually yes, but the exact rule depends on the bank and product. Some digital freelancer accounts are limited to new-to-bank customers, while other banks can open or tag a freelancer account for an existing customer. Confirm this before applying.

Do I Need Business Registration to Open a Freelancer Account?
Not necessarily. Individual freelancers can open dedicated freelancer accounts without forming a company when they meet the bank's KYC requirements. If you operate as a sole proprietor, partnership or company, the bank may ask for the registration documents relevant to that structure.

Can a Freelancer Receive Foreign Payments Without a Freelancer Account?
Yes. A normal eligible bank account can receive some foreign remittances, depending on the bank and payment route. A dedicated freelancer account is mainly useful for regular export income, clearer classification, easier documentation and access to a linked ESFCA.

How Long Does It Take to Open a Freelancer or Exporter Account?
There is no universal timeline. Some banks advertise digital decisions within about two working days when verification is complete, while branch-based or business/exporter cases can take longer. Missing documents or additional KYC checks can extend the process.

Can I Receive Payments From Multiple International Clients?
Yes, provided the payments are legitimate, the account is suitable for your activity and you keep separate invoices or payment records for each client. The bank may ask for supporting documents if transaction activity changes significantly.

Is There a Limit on How Much a Freelancer Can Receive From Abroad?
There is no single universal monthly receipt limit that applies to every commercial-bank freelancer account. Limits depend on the account type and bank. SBP's consolidated onboarding framework separately places a USD 5,000-per-month equivalent credit/debit limit on freelancer accounts opened by microfinance banks. The ESFCA rule is different: eligible freelancers may retain USD 5,000 per month or 50% of export proceeds, whichever is higher, in foreign currency.

Are Foreign Freelance Payments Taxable in Pakistan?
Foreign freelance income can have Pakistani tax and withholding obligations. The treatment depends on the service type, export status, registration and current tax year. Keep invoices, bank credits and remittance records so the income can be supported when you file.
