PM Shehbaz Orders Early Formation of National Population Council Structure

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to expedite the formation of the National Population Council's organisational structure, stressing the need for coordinated policymaking to address Pakistan's rapidly growing population. The directive was issued during a high-level meeting on population management and development.

The prime minister instructed relevant ministries to complete the council's framework at the earliest so it can begin formulating and implementing a comprehensive national population strategy.

Council to Coordinate National Population Policies

The National Population Council, chaired by the prime minister, will include the chief ministers of all four provinces, the prime minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and the chief minister of Gilgit-Baltistan. Its objective is to improve coordination between the federal and provincial governments on population-related policies.

Focus on Sustainable Development

During the meeting, PM Shehbaz emphasized that rapid population growth is placing increasing pressure on Pakistan's resources, including healthcare, education, housing, and employment. He called for a whole-of-government approach and directed authorities to accelerate awareness campaigns, improve family planning services, and strengthen collaboration with religious scholars and community leaders.

Conclusion

The prime minister said the early operationalisation of the National Population Council is essential for developing a unified national strategy on population management and ensuring sustainable development. The council is expected to play a key role in coordinating long-term policies across Pakistan.
