Karachi to Expand AI-Based Traffic Enforcement System to More Major Roads by August 2026

Karachi Traffic Police have announced plans to expand their artificial intelligence-powered traffic enforcement system to several key roads and intersections across the city by August 2026. The expansion will include Airport Road, Clifton, and the busy Do Talwar and Teen Talwar junctions, according to DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah.

The move comes after the successful implementation of the AI-driven traffic monitoring system on Shahrah-e-Faisal, one of Karachi's busiest and most important road corridors.

AI Traffic Monitoring Currently Operational on Shahrah-e-Faisal

The pilot project is currently being conducted on Shahrah-e-Faisal, where 20 high-resolution Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras have been installed. These cameras operate around the clock and monitor traffic up to the Drigh Road area.

The primary objective of the system is to detect lane violations automatically and issue e-challans to motorists who fail to follow designated lane rules.

According to traffic authorities, Shahrah-e-Faisal was selected as the testing ground due to its heavy traffic flow and strategic importance within the city's road network.

Why Shahrah-e-Faisal Was Chosen for the Pilot Project

DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah explained that the road was selected because it presents one of the most challenging traffic management environments in Karachi.

"If we can establish traffic discipline on Karachi's busiest artery, we can implement it successfully on any road," he stated.

Officials believe that improving lane discipline on high-volume roads can significantly reduce congestion, improve traffic movement, and enhance road safety for all commuters.

System Issuing Around 100 Challans Daily

The AI-powered enforcement system is currently generating an average of 100 challans every day for lane violations on Shahrah-e-Faisal.

Traffic police have warned motorists that violations are being monitored continuously, and drivers are expected to comply with lane regulations at all times.

While there is no exemption for a first-time offence, motorists are offered a one-time deferment facility under the current enforcement framework.

Technology Designed to Recognize Genuine Emergencies

DIG Pir Muhammad Shah emphasized that the system is not solely focused on issuing fines. The technology has been developed to distinguish between intentional traffic violations and unavoidable circumstances.

Cases involving vehicle breakdowns, damaged road surfaces, potholes, medical emergencies, or other genuine situations are flagged for manual review before any final action is taken.

This approach is intended to ensure fairness while maintaining strict enforcement of traffic laws.

Lane Violation Fines for Different Vehicle Categories

Traffic authorities have introduced different penalty amounts based on vehicle type and the level of risk associated with the violation.

Officials believe the penalty structure will encourage motorists to follow traffic rules and improve overall road discipline.

Positive Impact Already Visible

According to the traffic police, the results of the pilot project are already becoming evident on Shahrah-e-Faisal.

Authorities report smoother traffic movement and better lane discipline, particularly among public transport vehicles. Buses that previously moved across multiple lanes are increasingly staying within their designated lanes, contributing to a more organized traffic flow.

The success of the initiative has encouraged traffic authorities to extend the AI-based monitoring system to other major roads and intersections across Karachi in the coming months.

With the planned expansion, officials hope to further improve traffic management, reduce violations, and create safer roads for millions of daily commuters throughout the city.
