Metallica Donates £20,000 to Cardiff Foodbank After Stadium Gig

Metallica has donated £20,000 to Cardiff Foodbank, providing an estimated 9,000 meals to people across the Welsh capital. The contribution — the charity's largest-ever celebrity donation — was made through the band's philanthropic arm, All Within My Hands Foundation, ahead of their headline concert at Principality Stadium on June 28

The announcement follows a social media appeal by the foodbank just two weeks prior, in which the charity warned its warehouse shelves had never been so empty. The donation will fund a bulk food order to restock supplies for a charity that serves 20,000 people annually across eight centres in Cardiff.

Cardiff Foodbank's Urgent Plea Reached the Right Ears

Two weeks before Metallica took the stage at Principality Stadium, Cardiff Foodbank posted a public appeal on social media expressing serious concern about dwindling supplies.

"We had never seen the warehouse so empty," the charity noted at the time. That appeal, it turns out, reached the American rock band's foundation team thousands of miles away.

"We had an email saying 'This isn't a scam, please get in touch with the foundation'," said Rachel Biggs, CEO of Cardiff Foodbank. "They said 'We are going to donate £20,000 to you'."

The pledge arrived without warning — and without strings attached.

How the All Within My Hands Foundation Works

Metallica and its management launched the All Within My Hands Foundation in 2017 with a straightforward mission: direct a portion of ticket revenue from every tour stop to local and national charities in each city the band visits.

Since its founding, the foundation has supported foodbanks across multiple countries, making community-level impact a regular feature of Metallica's touring operation.

Cardiff Gig Prompted More Than Just a Donation

Alongside the financial contribution, Metallica partnered with the Welsh Blood Service ahead of the June 28 concert to encourage fans to donate blood and plasma.

Dedicated donation sessions ran across Wales throughout the week leading up to the show and are scheduled to continue through July 3, expanding the band's community footprint beyond a single cheque.

What the £20,000 Means for Cardiff's Most Vulnerable

For a charity operating on an estimated £700,000 annual budget, a single donation of this size carries substantial weight.

Biggs confirmed the money will go directly toward restocking depleted shelves through a large bulk food order.

"When this donation arrives in our bank account we'll be able to put in a bulk order and replenish stock," she said.

The CEO also noted that while demand has remained steady — consistent with last year's figures — food donations from the public have fallen by 27%, a decline she attributed to the broader cost-of-living squeeze affecting donors as well as those the charity serves.

Children Among the Hardest Hit

Cardiff Foodbank's most recent annual figures reveal that one in three people the charity fed were children — underscoring the stakes behind every gap in supply.

Foodbank's Biggest Celebrity Donation on Record

Cardiff Foodbank described Metallica's contribution as their largest celebrity donation to date, surpassing a previous gift from Taylor Swift, who donated to the same charity in 2024 during her Eras Tour performances at Principality Stadium.

Swift's donation, while not disclosed in exact figures, was described by the charity as enough to purchase one-and-a-half articulated lorries' worth of food.

Taylor Swift

2024

Funded ~1.5 lorries of food

Metallica

2025

£20,000 — approx. 9,000 meals

Fan Reaction From Inside the Charity

Eddie Cawston, a Cardiff Foodbank volunteer and self-described Metallica fan, held tickets to Sunday's show and learned of the donation through his work at the charity.

"It shows that people who can make a difference are prepared to make a difference," he said.

Wider Impact: Mobilising a Community, Not Just Writing a Cheque

Biggs stressed that the value of a high-profile donation extends beyond its monetary figure.

"What's great for us [is] it helps raise the profile and what Metallica are doing is mobilising their fans, mobilising the local community," she said.

With food donations down and running costs rising, the charity is counting on the public visibility generated by Metallica's gesture to translate into sustained community support through the remainder of the year.
