EU-Backed MANZIL Project to Support 4,000 Young Pakistanis

KARACHI: A new EUR 1.2 million initiative co-funded by the European Union has been launched to create economic opportunities, strengthen climate action and develop community leadership among young Pakistanis. The MANZIL project will reach around 4,000 vulnerable young women and men and build the capacity of 40 youth-led organisations in four locations across Pakistan.

MANZIL stands for Youth Leadership Transforming Communities for Inclusive Economic Growth, Climate Action and Good Governance. The programme will operate in Rawalpindi, Lahore, Mirpurkhas and Sanghar.

The initiative is financially supported by the European Union and will be implemented by Norwegian Church Aid in partnership with the Civil Society Support Programme and Shirakat Foundation.

Under the programme, young people will receive market-related skills and support to establish or expand their livelihoods. It will also help them develop leadership abilities and create local solutions for climate-related challenges in their communities.

The project aims to prepare young participants to work as entrepreneurs, climate advocates, community leaders and active partners in local governance. Youth-led organisations will also receive support to carry out development activities, involve communities and work with public institutions.

Special attention will be given to women and girls, persons with disabilities, transgender persons, faith minorities and young people from historically marginalised communities.

Speaking at the launch, Dr Sébastien Lorion of the European Union Delegation in Pakistan said giving young people opportunities, recognition and a voice could help societies become more innovative, resilient and fair.

Stephen Kent of Norwegian Church Aid said the project views young people as leaders, innovators and partners rather than only beneficiaries of development programmes. He said stronger skills, organisations and links with public institutions could continue benefiting communities after the project ends.

MANZIL will combine entrepreneurship support, leadership and management training, climate resilience, organisational development and youth-led community activities. It will also encourage cooperation between young people, civil society organisations and relevant government institutions.
