New Smart NICOP Launched With Secure Chip and QR Verification

LAHORE: The National Database Registration Authority (NADRA) has introduced a new version of the National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOP). The updated card comes with a secure microchip, stronger security features and improved durability. A separate QR code-enabled NICOP is also available for faster verification of cardholder information.

NADRA has also stopped issuing Teslin-based NICOP cards, replacing them with the newly introduced versions.

The NICOP is issued under Section 12 of the NADRA Ordinance, 2000. It serves as proof of identity and Pakistani nationality and allows eligible overseas Pakistanis to enter the country without a visa.

The card is available to Pakistani citizens living or working abroad. Pakistani nationals with dual nationality from a country recognised by the Government of Pakistan may also apply.

Pakistani citizens planning to stay abroad for an extended period can obtain the card as official proof of their identity and nationality. Children of Pakistani citizens born overseas may also apply if they qualify for registration as Pakistani citizens.

Applicants must submit their personal information and supporting documents for identity and citizenship verification. Children born abroad must also meet the required conditions for registration as Pakistani citizens.

For applicants in the United States, NADRA offers three processing categories. The normal service costs $39 and has an estimated processing time of 31 days.

The urgent service costs $57 and is expected to take 23 days, while the executive service costs $75 with an estimated processing time of nine days.

Applicants can select a processing category according to how quickly they need the document.
