US Iran War Escalation After Ceasefire Ends

WASHINGTON / TEHRAN: Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated sharply after a tenuous ceasefire broke down, with both sides continuing military actions and indirect talks through mediators, according to multiple sources.

U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed that the ceasefire with Iran is “over”, even as Washington agreed to continue diplomatic talks at lower levels, officials said. The collapse followed a series of attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz that reignited hostilities.

Earlier in the week, the U.S. military carried out intense airstrikes targeting Iranian military facilities, including air defenses, command and control centers, and missile storage sites along Iran’s coastline. Iranian forces responded with missile and drone attacks on U.S. allies in the Gulf, further heightening regional instability.

Despite renewed fighting, mediators from Qatar, Pakistan, and other nations have been working to revive diplomatic engagement between Tehran and Washington, though progress remains limited.

The conflict’s impact has also been felt in global shipping and energy markets, with traffic through the Strait of Hormuz — a crucial route for oil shipments — dropping significantly due to the ongoing hostilities and military actions.

Regional leaders continue to urge restraint, but the absence of a firm ceasefire agreement has kept tensions high across the Middle East, raising concerns about broader instability.
