Pakistan has extended the deadline for the new digitally verified vaccination certificate system for Umrah pilgrims departing from Karachi until September 25. Manual vaccination certificates will remain valid until the extended deadline.
The extension comes after Jinnah International Airport authorities requested additional time to prepare for the new system and coordinate with relevant agencies.
Deadline Extended Until September 25
The new digital vaccination certificate system was originally scheduled to become mandatory for passengers departing from Karachi after September 14.
However, the deadline has now been extended until September 25. During this period, passengers departing from Karachi can continue using their manual vaccination certificates.
Dr. Syed Murtaza Shah Bukhari, focal person for Border Health Services Pakistan, confirmed the extension.
Why the Digital Certificate System Is Being Introduced
Saudi Arabia requires Umrah pilgrims to meet vaccination requirements, with the requirements varying according to the traveller’s country of origin and health risk.
Pakistan has recently seen strong growth in religious travel, with the country recording a major rise in Umrah arrivals from Pakistan.
Pakistan is introducing a system that connects vaccination records with the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA). This will allow vaccination certificates to be verified digitally.
The change is focused on the certification process and does not introduce additional vaccination requirements.
Jinnah International Airport Seeks Extension
The management of Jinnah International Airport (JIAP) requested more time before the new system became mandatory.
Airport authorities raised concerns about coordination between different agencies involved in implementing the system.
Acting Chief Operating Officer Muhammad Qasim said additional time would allow authorities to complete operational arrangements and develop a practical and passenger-friendly implementation strategy in coordination with all stakeholders.
The airport management had requested that implementation be deferred until at least October 1.

Karachi to Get Pakistan’s First Digital Certification System
Karachi will become the first Pakistani airport to introduce the integrated digital vaccination certification system.
After its introduction in Karachi, the system will be expanded to other international airports and border entry and exit points across the country.
No New Vaccination Requirements Introduced
The new system only changes how vaccination status is certified. It does not introduce new vaccination requirements for Umrah travellers.
