Khawaja Asif Announces Major Development Projects for Sialkot
SIALKOT: Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif has announced progress on major development projects for Sialkot, saying construction of the first phase of the Sialkot Ring Road will begin soon. He added that the Kharian-Rawalpindi Motorway has entered the implementation stage, with both projects expected to improve transport links, reduce traffic pressure and strengthen the city’s economic importance.
Speaking to the media, Khawaja Asif said politicians and the administration must work together to ensure development schemes are completed through collective efforts.
He said several union councils would directly benefit from the projects, while relevant authorities had been directed to complete already-approved schemes without unnecessary delays.
According to the minister, the Rs205 billion contract for the Kharian-Rawalpindi Motorway has been awarded to the Frontier Works Organisation, while construction of the bridge over the Chenab River is nearing completion.
Khawaja Asif said Sialkot had faced difficulties because it lacked a direct connection with GT Road, adding that former prime minister Nawaz Sharif addressed the issue by connecting the city with the motorway network.
The first phase of the Ring Road will connect Wazirabad Road, Daska Road, Pasrur Road and Kashmir Road. The project is expected to ease traffic congestion and support commercial activity.
He said Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz had continued Sialkot’s development projects despite financial constraints. He also thanked the federal government and the prime minister for advancing the motorway project.
The defence minister said the Ring Road would connect the city’s industrial areas, export sector, airport and motorway network, significantly improving traffic movement across Sialkot.
